How the SC Safe Home Program Works
Administered by the South Carolina Department of Insurance, the program provides financial assistance to owner-occupied, single-family homes located in coastal areas. The funds are exclusively meant for retrofitting projects and cannot be used for general home repairs, remodeling, or new construction.
Grant awards are based on your household's adjusted gross income and the cost of your mitigation project. These amounts are determined using annual income data provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Grant Types and Amounts
• Matching Grants: Up to $3,000
• Non-Matching Grants: Up to $5,000
If the total cost of your project exceeds the grant amount, the remaining expense will be the homeowner’s responsibility. A total of $2.2 million has been allocated for the SC Safe Home program during this funding cycle, with $1.1 million awarded in the first round.
