Although we’re well into the hurricane season of 2019, we still haven’t seen the worst of it yet. At Armor Building Solutions, we want to make it easier for you to keep you and your loved ones safe this season – in the most efficient way possible. These are the top five ways to be prepared for a storm or hurricane, as well as key areas to focus on, according to the American Red Cross.
Learn In Advance
Listen for National Weather Service alerts on your television, radio, or online to stay up-to-date minute by minute. If you are under a hurricane watch, there is no proof of hurricane as of yet, but dangerous winds have started. If you are under a hurricane warning, your weather experts are predicting a hurricane to occur any minute.
To be Red Cross Ready – you should do the following:
- Assemble an emergency preparedness kit
- Create a household evacuation kit
- Stay informed about your community’s risk and response plans
- Educate your family on what to do in the cask of an emergency
Protect Your Family
The most important thing to prepare for a storm is to know what to do in order to protect yourself and your family. Well before you are in danger, you should talk with your family about what they should do if a storm does hit. This will help calm their fears and make them feel more confident in the event of a storm.
You should also:
- Have a Safe and Well wallet card for each of your family members
- Have a battery-powered radio, in the case of a power outage
- Keep your insurance policies and other important documents in a safety deposit box, for quick access
Protect Your Pets
Your pets are the first ones to sense when a storm is on its way. It’s important to include them in your storm preparedness, but having a pet emergency kit set aside in the case of an emergency.
This kit should include:
- A leash, harness, carrier, etc.
- Food, water, bowls, etc.
- Medications and medical records
- First Aid Kit
- Information on your pet and their feeding schedule, medical conditions, etc. in case you need to board them
Protect Your Home
At Armor Building Solutions, we are experts in this category of storm preparedness. It’s imperative that you prepare your home for a storm well before you are in danger. You can do this by protecting your windows with temporary or permanent storm shutters, identifying a place to store fly-away lawn furniture, gardening tools, grills, etc. that could be moved by high winds, clearing clogged rain gutters in the event of heavy rain, and prepare your flood insurance if necessary.
Be Ready
Here are additional extra tips if you have extra time to prepare:
- Fill bottles with clean water for drinking
- Fill bathtubs and sinks with water for flushing the toilet, washing clothing, etc.
- Turn off propane tanks and unplug appliances
- Bring in anything outside of your home that could be picked up by the wind
